His Answer

Brie turned to see Gino Mancini standing behind them. She’d forgotten how strikingly handsome the man was with his salt-and-pepper hair and classic Italian good looks.

He smiled warmly at Sir, holding out his hand. “Here I am on my way to meeting with a client, and I suddenly run into you. How have you and your beautiful family been?”

It took a moment for Sir to gather himself enough to take Gino’s hand and shake it. He glanced at Brie, the pain still in his eyes, but answered, “We are well.”

Brie caught people staring at Gino and even whispering amongst themselves as they walked by. He was a very important man in Italy. She assumed he must have to deal with that kind of attention constantly—especially on an island as small as Isola d’Elba.

While it made the situation that much more uneasy for the two of them, Gino seemed completely comfortable with it. “What brings you from America?”

Brie spoke up, wanting to give Sir time to recover. “We came to visit the grandparents with our children.”

He cocked his head, his smile growing wider. “Children?”

“Yes,” Brie stated proudly. “We now have a son.”

“That is wonderful news. Congratulations!”

Gino turned to Sir. “Alonzo would be proud. This is cause for celebration. Please, let me take you out to lunch after my meeting.”

Sir shook his head, answering stiffly, “I’m sorry we can’t, but my wife and I appreciate the offer.”

Putting his hand over his heart, Gino confessed, “When I think of all the things Alonzo has missed, it hurts me.”

Sir cleared his throat, struggling to keep his emotions in check. “Yes.”

Seeing Sir’s discomfort, Gino thoughtfully turned to Brie and asked, “How is your film coming, Brianna?”

“Things are going exceptionally well,” she replied, grateful to take the focus off Sir. “In fact, my next film is set to be released next summer.”

He looked at her quizzically. “How can this be? You never returned to finish your research.”

Brie understood his confusion and explained, “It’s a different documentary I’ve been working on, Signore Mancini.”

“Ah.” He seemed to look at her with new admiration. “It appears you have been exceedingly busy since we last met.”

Brie chuckled. “It has been a whirlwind.”

“Does this mean you are shelving the documentary on Alonzo?”

“Oh, no,” she assured him. “I still have every intention of making Alonzo’s documentary. It’s just been put on the backburner for now.”

“That is a shame to hear, but my offer remains.” He gave her a charming grin. “You have an open invitation to come to my home anytime you wish to continue your research.”

He glanced at Sir. “It would be an honor to have both of you visit my home.”

Brie was grateful Gino had extended the invitation to Sir as well. The last time she’d gone, Gino traveled on business shortly after she arrived, making Sir uncomfortable about her going there unattended again.

Sir was gracious to him, explaining, “I appreciate the invitation, although I have no idea when we will be returning to Italy again.”

Gino nodded. “I understand, Signore Davis.
